Avalanche Lake

Spending Fourth of July weekend in Glacier National Park was the best! A little short, but no regrets about going! Before we began our 11 hour drive home at the end of the three-day weekend, we found a short hike to Avalanche Lake that we couldn’t pass up. There was a light sprinkle coming down as we began what we thought was a 3 mile hike. The air was very cool, a little chilly, especially for July. I was layered up, knee high socks and all! I hate to be cold!

A fast-flowing river carved a path between the walls of a deep, narrow canyon along the left side of the trail. The sound of rushing water filled the air. The water was a gorgeous rich blue! We passed a few people along the trail, but it wasn’t really that busy with other hikers that morning. The hike was hilly, but nothing strenuous, which gave us an even greater opportunity to admire the beauty as we hiked. Everything was covered in green. Tall trees lined the trail and laced the surrounding area. Everything about the area was absolutely spectacular!

The hike was closer to 5 miles round trip. We didn’t anticipate the length, but we were not disappointed when we came to the lake. The trees opened up to a beautiful, almost secret, magical lake in the middle of a lush forest. The lake was surrounded by trees on three sides and a stunning mountain with multiple snow runoff waterfalls flowing down its face. When we stepped into the clearing, the scene took my breath away. We were both amazed by what we saw! Avalanche Lake is awe-inspiring!

Nature is something that both Rob and I love and appreciate. The love of nature and desire to explore get us out hiking pretty often. We have never once done a hike and at the end thought, wow, that was a waste of time. Nature rejuvenates me and reminds me of all that is beautiful and good in this world. Every time I am out hiking, my problems become so small and my soul is filled with gratitude for my Father in Heaven and this insanely incredible planet that He has created for us to live on.

Glacier put on quite the show for us; pristine glacier filled lakes, incredible hikes, stunning views, blue skies, lush forests, fantastic camp grounds, polar bear swims (we were the polar bears and that water was so cold, upon contact our lungs literally collapsed inside of us and had to regain consciousness), and so much more! We barely scratched the surface of what this park has to offer, but we were so impressed with what we saw. We will definitely be back some day!
